What To Expect From the Upcoming iPads, Where To Watch, and Why It May Matter for Gamers

Apple is set to host its ‘Let Loose’ event today at 7:30 pm IST, and it is most likely an event that will introduce the new line-up for iPad in 2024. The revamped versions of the iPad Pro and Air are going to be the focus for today’s showcase, and it has been reported that we may get to see new OLED displays for the Pro models. As for the iPad Air, it is expected to feature a 12.9-inch screen option for the first time.

Apple iPad Pro (2024)
The report from Bloomberg has further added that the new iPad Pro models may include Apple’s first M4 processors which will enable more power for AI tasks. It has also been claimed that the device would finally feature an OLED screen which will provide better image quality, and a comparatively thinner iPad device. The new iPad models will feature 11-inch and 12.9-inch screen sizes. From what it looks like, Apple is set to provide an overhaul to their iPad lineup for the first time since 2018.

Apple iPad Air (2024)
The iPad Air would offer comparatively budget-friendly options in the iPad lineup. The iPad Air has typically arrived with a smaller size version compared to the Pro model but it has been reported that another option of a new 12.9-inch size is most likely arriving, which would be the same size as the new iPad Pro. Both of these iPad Air models are expected to receive the M2 chip which Apple introduced for MacBook Air in 2022.

Apple Pencil (2024)
The Apple logo for this upcoming event features a stylus too, and hence, there are expectations that the Apple Pencil will receive an upgrade too. The new Apple Pencil is reportedly going to feature haptic feedback, which is a minor vibration effect that gets triggered when using the stylus. It has also been suggested that the haptic feedback will also enable the Pencil to add new action such as squeezing the Pencil to perform a certain task.

Apple Magic Keyboard (2024)
Apple is also updating its Magic Keyboard which is essentially an iPad case that comes with a keyboard and small trackpad. The new upgrade will add more durability to the product, will use aluminum and it will offer the iPad a “laptop-like” look, as per the Bloomberg report.

Reported Apple iPad line-up
Here is the reported line-up for iPad will be like after today’s event:

iPad (9th gen): 10.2-inch screen with a home button
iPad (10th gen): 0.9-inch screen without a home button
iPad mini (6th gen): 8.3-inch screen
iPad Air: 11-inch and 12.9-inch models, with M2 chips
iPad Pro: 11-inch and 12.9-inch models with M4 chips

What gamers require from the new iPad
While the lineup and its reported specifications indicate upgrades in some departments, there are still other key areas that enable gaming on these devices. For starters, the OLED display will be a great addition to gaming, as it will offer crisp details and better-looking visuals. It also remains to be seen if Apple will introduce its M4 chips which are expected to offer more performance power, which is imperative for a smooth gaming experience, especially for AAA titles such as Assassin’s Creed Mirage (arriving in June for iPad), and future AAA titles that may arrive for iPad.

Similarly, better refresh rate is just as important as OLED displays on the iPad. The existing iPad Pro offers 120Hz dynamic refresh rate, and it remains to be seen if Apple would look to improve upon that aspect or maintain it for the OLED displays.

Last but not least, the battery life and performance are extremely vital for gaming, as the iPad would be expected to handle the power consumption in AAA titles and other demanding mobile games. The devices would also be expected to last longer during gaming sessions.

Long gaming sessions would invariably lead to heat generation and gamers would expect that the iPad can keep the temperature at bay during playtime.
