The Boy and the Heron’s Box Office Collection in India Revealed

It has been three weeks since The Boy and the Heron released in India, and we now have the box office collections for the film’s first two weeks.
So, how did the Studio Ghibli film fare in the country? Here are the figures IGN India obtained from sources:

NBOC (net box office collection)

Week 1: ₹1.50 crores ($180,500)
Week 2: ₹60 lakhs ($72,000)
Total NBOC for two weeks: ₹2.1 crores ($252,000)

GBOC (gross box office collection)

Week 1: ₹1.85 crores ($222,500)
Week 2: ₹72 lakhs ($86,600)
Total GBOC for two weeks: ₹2.59 crores ($311,700)

For context, net box office collection (NBOC) is the collection remaining after taxes are deducted from ticket sales. Gross box office collection (GBOC) includes taxes. Different states in India also have varying tax percentages on movie tickets.

For comparison, in Japan, The Boy and the Heron grossed ¥1.8 billion ($13.2 million) in its opening weekend with no marketing, reaching ¥8.98 billion ($61 million) by March 2024. In the U.S., the film had one of the biggest international openings, earning $13 million in its opening weekend and collecting $46.8 million gross. In China, the film performed even better, passing $95 million at the box office.

The Oscar and Golden Globe-winning animated film released in India in Japanese and English dubs (with no IMAX release) on May 10, 2024, after months of speculation about its release. Southeast Asian film distributor Encore Films had mentioned back in February that the company was working to bring the film to India. However, reports in April suggested the film might not make it to India. Fortunately, a sudden announcement by Warner Bros. India in the same month caught anime fans by surprise, confirming the film’s release.

In IGN India’s 9/10 review of The Boy and the Heron, we called the film a “gorgeous, complex, and deeply personal exploration of life’s hardships and love through Hayao Miyazaki’s masterful storytelling.”

It was also announced in March that The Boy and the Heron is set to arrive on Netflix.
