The Boy and the Heron received a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards on January 23.
However, this isn’t its first significant honour. The film by director Hayao Miyazaki also made history by becoming the first non-English and anime film to win a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film.

The Studio Ghibli film is also part of the longlist for the BAFTA awards in the categories of Best Animation and Film Not in the English Language.
Undoubtedly, The Boy and the Heron stands as one of Miyazaki’s finest works, garnering acclaim from both fans and critics, and collecting accolades in various arenas. The director is no stranger to the Academy Awards, with this being his fourth film nominated in the Best Animated Feature category. The Boy and the Heron marks Studio Ghibli’s seventh nomination at the Academy Awards.
Among the competitors for the Oscar in the Best Animated Feature category are Elemental, Nimona, Robot Dreams, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. While all films in the category present tough competition for The Boy and the Heron, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stands out, given its remarkable success and praise.
The 96th Academy Awards are set to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, on March 10, 2024, revealing which animated film will secure the award.
