The 1839 Awards 2024 color photography winners

The 1839 Awards, a platform celebrating the art of photography, has unveiled the winners of its 2024 Color Photography Contest. This year’s competition attracted a global audience, with entries submitted by talented photographers from 55 countries.

Celebrating both professional and hobbyist photographers, the contest recognizes the winners in both categories across multiple genres. And trust me, you’re in for a real treat. So, let’s dive right in!

Contest winner – Professional category

The overall winner in the Professional contest is Alexandrena Parker from Australia. Known for her joyful and expressive portraiture of children, her aesthetic is a direct reflection of the warmth and affinity she feels towards the process of photography and her subjects.

“The sight of children engaged in unsupervised play, left to their own devices in the streets, has become increasingly rare,” the photographer explains. “Set in outback Australia, the scenes weave together the past and present, symbolising the relationship between the landscape and the timeless essence of childhood.”

In addition to winning overall first place, Alexandrena’s series also won first place in the Storytelling and Conceptual (Professional) category and third place in the People (Professional) category.

Contest winner – Non-Professional category

The overall winner in the Non-Professional category is Astrid Reischwitz from Germany. Her project combines two things that are very close to my heart: photography and embroidery. By following the stitches in fabric from my village in Germany, I follow a path through the lives of my ancestors – their layout of a perfect pattern and the mistakes they made,” Astrid says about her project. “The patterns I have stitched myself into the paper represent fragments of memory.”

Her fantastic project also won first place in the Conceptual and Other categories of the Non-Professional contest.

The winning images in various categories showcase the boundless potential of color photography. And they don’t only include photos: the contest also has a dedicated section for AI-generated work. Funnily enough, an actual photo was initially awarded in this category and then disqualified. You can read more about it here.
