Steven Spielberg Confirms Involvement in Ready Player Two but Not as a Director

Legendary director Steven Spielberg has confirmed he will be a producer for the upcoming sequel to Ready Player One (2018). Spielberg directed the first movie based on Ernest Cline’s novel. Let’s check more details about his role in the Ready Player One sequel.

Spielberg recently spoke to Showbiz 411 at the Universal Pictures gala at Soho House after the 2024 Oscars. He was quizzed about his upcoming projects and said, “We’re in the discovery phase, trying to figure out what’s next.” At this moment, the director has no project in production for 2024. Spielberg also confirmed that he will be involved in Ready Player Two but said he will only be coming on as a producer.

While Spielberg has mentioned his involvement, there has been no official confirmation about the sequel yet. Warner Bros. has not announced plans to develop Ready Player Two at the time of writing.

The screenplay for the adaptation of the first movie was written by Ernest Cline, the author of the novel along with Zak Penn. Penn also wrote the story for The Avengers (2012) for context. The Sci-Fi movie is set in a dystopian future where people use OASIS, a virtual reality simulated world, to escape the real world.

Cline published a sequel book titled Ready Player Two in 2020. As with the first movie, the sequel will be based on this sequel book. Interestingly, Cline said in 2020 that a sequel is in the early stages of production. But four years later, an official announcement is still pending.
