Rise of the Ronin Receives M18 Rating Due to Graphic Violence and Sexual Content

Rise of the Ronin, the upcoming open-world action-adventure game, has received an M18 Rating from Singapore’s Media Development Authority. This classified the game as suitable only for players aged 18 or above. This rating has been assigned due to the existence of strong violence as well as sexual references present in Rise of the Ronin.

Singapore’s Media Development Authority (MDA) has also explained the reasoning behind its decision (spotted by Twisted Voxel) to assign an M18 rating to the game. The player character in Rise of the Ronin uses a variety of weapons to engage in combat and it leads to the depiction of graphic violence which includes the display of blood and also dismemberment of the body in varying ways.

MDA also mentions that the M18 rating has thus been assigned as it allows “depictions of realistic violence, such as killing, maiming or causing other serious injury to humanoid characters.”

Furthermore, it has also been revealed that Rise of the Ronin consists of homosexual content as well as suggestive content including “descriptions of sexual innuendoes during conversations between characters without explicit details shown.” MDA adds that the M18 rating has been assigned as it allows the depiction of “some homosexual content, if discreet in treatment and not gratuitous.”

Rise of the Ronin is developed by Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja, known for developing Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and Nioh series. Published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Rise of the Ronin will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive game. The game is set in 19th-century Japan where players take on the role of a ronin, which is a term used to describe a samurai with no master.

Rise of the Ronin is releasing this month on March 22, 2024, for the PlayStation 5.
