PUBG to Be Expanded as an IP Along With Update 2.0 and Shift to Unreal Engine, According to Goldman Sachs

BGMI (Battlegrounds Mobile India) makers Krafton is set to further expand its highly popular PUBG IP. Krafton reportedly has a number of strategies in place for the same including a PUBG 2.0 update for the battle royale on PC.

South Korean company Krafton is reportedly planning “incremental updates” for the sustenance and expansion of the PUBG IP. This information comes from Goldman Sachs, a leading American investment firm via TechCrunch. According to this report, Krafton strategises to make a franchise out of its various PUBG properties including PUBG: Battlegrounds, PUBG Mobile, BGMI and PUBG: New State. They reportedly intend to launch a “diverse genre, platform and play mode.”

Additionally, the report also mentions a major graphics upheaval for PUBG 2.0 for what they title as PUBG 2.0. However, PUBG Mobile 2.0 released back in May 2022. Therefore, as popular leaker PlayerIGN pointed out, the report might have been intended for PUBG: Battlegrounds, which is the PC version of PUBG Mobile.

Regardless, the graphics upgrade will reportedly involve a transition from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5. Krafton further reported in a statement that this transition is one of the “various attempts” being considered for the “sustainable growth of the PUBG: Battlegrounds IP”.

TechCrunch spotted a note by US bank Goldman Sachs affirming PUBG 2.0 revamp on Unreal Engine 5.Also I can’t find the “note.”They also specifically pointed to PUBG Mobile, but I’m pretty sure that’s just general confusion between the Tencent game and PC by mainstream news. pic.twitter.com/DTH3CgKiAu

Goldman Sachs has reportedly also reflected on the expected growth of PUBG’s PC and mobile titles. BGMI has been especially mentioned after its ‘relaunch’ in India last year. Goldman Sachs reportedly added in their statement the following- “We observe BGMI maintaining its #1 position in gross ranking, which we interpret as users starting to believe in a ‘full return of BGMI.’ As Krafton increases investment in the local market (e.g., esports event, localized promotions), we believe BGMI should continue posting robust revenues, and hence we bake in 2023E/24E/25E revenue of W77bn/W152bn/W157bn (6%/11%/12% of mobile revenue; reflecting BGMI unban).”
