Next-Gen Console Might Include an AMD NPU for Automatic Super Resolution and More

Microsoft will reportedly focus on implementing artificial intelligence for the next-gen Xbox consoles via AMD’s Neural Processing Units (NPUs), according to a report from Windows Central journalist Jez Corden.

According to the report on the upcoming Xbox next-gen consoles, it’s still unclear and unconfirmed at this time. The report states that the next-gen Xbox consoles from Microsoft could possibly include an (NPU) for managing AI tasks such as automatic Super Resolution, for example. Though the manufacturer hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s likely to be AMD.

The report further states that the next gen Xbox will also include a feature, a form of Copilot AI, guiding players in-game without needing to visit websites. Microsoft introduced Automatic Super Resolution (AutoSR) technology, which lowers the game’s rendering resolution to increase framerate and utilizes AI for high-definition visuals, ensuring smooth gaming.

Games Supported by AutoSR
Here are some of the games that Microsoft’s AutoSR supports at the moment:

7 Days to Die
BeamNG drive
Borderlands 3
Control
Dark Souls III
God of War
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 3
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Currently, Auto SR technology is exclusive to CoPilot+ PCs equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon X Processors. Auto SR is limited to games running as native Arm apps or through Arm emulation. It remains uncertain whether other chips, such as AMD and Intel, will be able to utilize the Auto SR Technology. However, AMD and Intel are expected to have their own set of CoPilot+ PCs with similar efficient NPUs inside.
