Maverick Scene Because It Was ‘Boring’

Top Gun: Maverick actor Jennifer Connelly has recently shared a new instance, that focuses on Tom Cruise’s eye for filmmaking. She revealed how Cruise got an entire shot scrapped and replaced with a new different scene, simply because he thought the original shot was “boring” and could be improved to give more justice to Connelly’s character in the movie.

Jennifer Connelly, in an interview with Vanity Fair (via Screen Rant), revealed that the film originally had a romantic boat scene where Connelly and Cruise shared the screen. The original scene was shot in San Diego, where Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly) were together on a boat that Penny was sailing.

Connelly said that even though it was a “beautiful” boat and they saw “dolphins” and had a “great” time, Cruise said that the scene was “boring” and was “not fast enough” and “not cool enough.” She added that Cruise said that he wanted Penny “to be really strong.” Connelly said that she agreed with him, and the team then shot a new scene in San Francisco.

It was “super windy” in San Francisco and “It was an entirely different experience. We’re like getting soaked, and the wind. It’s so much better,” Connelly said. The actor also explained that since there was not much time for these two characters to establish who they are, the scene’s “high-octane adrenaline experience” was a “great choice.”

Tom Cruise is known for his action movies, particularly the Mission Impossible flicks, but before that came the Top Gun movie back in 1986. The sequel arrived 36 years later, as Maverick returned to Top Gun to train new pilots for a high-risk mission.
