Krafton’s PUBG Studio Is Developing a New Game To ‘Push the Shooter Genre Forward’

Krafton’s PUBG Madison studio, developers of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, are now working on a new IP in the shooter genre. This title is different from the already confirmed Black Budget project, which will serve as a spin-off to the PUBG IP.

Back in November 2023, it was announced that Black Budget is an upcoming PUBG spinoff featuring an “everchanging PvPvE open world.” Now, there is a new job listing by PUBG Madison (as spotted by Gamesual), which reveals information about what the studio, which brought a genre-defining battle royale to the scene, is planning.

“PUBG Madison is developing an exciting new IP that aims to push the shooter genre forward”, as per the listing, and while there is no official communication yet about the title, the job openings’ descriptions paint a rough picture of what the game may offer and look like. For starters, the position of Senior Level Designer requires a “strong knowledge of shooters, both PVP and PVE”, so it may be another PvPvE title from Krafton. Moreover, there is also a requirement that the Senior Level Designer would have “directly own the level design of Points of Interest within large maps and other areas as assigned”, which points towards large maps with various POIs.There is another job opening for a Senior Technical Animator, where one of the responsibilities is to “author rigs and assets spanning across characters, weapons, creatures, vehicles, and props.”

PUBG Studios’ next project might be made on Unreal Engine 5
While it is still a stretch, all three of these do make it seem like another battle royale shooter is brewing, but there is no mention of battle royale in the listings to expand on that school of thought. PUBG Madison has also claimed that they will look to “push the shooter genre forward”, and another battle royale title might not be what they would have in mind for accomplishing that.

Interestingly, the listings also require experience in Unreal Engine 4 and 5, so the upcoming project might be based on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5, and given the recent reports about Krafton’s pivot to Unreal Engine for PUBG, it becomes likely that other projects are also following the same route.

Regardless, all of these are speculations at the moment, so it is advised to take this information in with a pinch of salt until there is an official announcement from Krafton.
