According to a recent Bloomberg report, Rocksteady Studios, known for the Arkham trilogy, opted to scrap a multiplayer game to focus on developing Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Contrary to rumours, the studio did not undertake the rumoured Superman title.
Following their work on Batman: Arkham Knight and Batman: Arkham VR, Rocksteady Studios initially worked on an unannounced multiplayer project unrelated to the Arkham or DC universe. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Montreal was developing a Suicide Squad game in 2016, and when that project was shelved, it was handed over to Rocksteady.
Rocksteady’s upcoming title, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, is scheduled for release on January 30, 2024. However, IGN’s Destin Legarie, after testing the game, was not impressed with Rocksteady’s first major project in almost nine years, writing, “Rocksteady’s first large-scale game in almost nine years is not clicking with us yet.”
In Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, players assume the roles of one of four supervillains and take on members of the Justice League. The gameplay allows for both solo and co-op with friends, taking place in the open-world setting of Metropolis. Diverging from the narrative-focused single-player approach of the Batman Arkham series, Suicide Squad adopts a live service model featuring a battle pass, although Rocksteady refrains from explicitly using that term.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is scheduled for release on February 2, 2024, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC.
