Hollywood Concept Artist Accuses the Makers of the Indian Sci-Fi Epic of Plagiarism

Kalki 2898 AD, an upcoming Indian Sci-Fi film from Nag Ashwin and Vyjayanthi Movies, will be released on June 26, 2024. The movie is set in a dystopian future, featuring Indian mythology and revolving around the concept of Kali Yuga, the Hindu version of the apocalypse. As the second most expensive Indian film, it has piqued the interest of many and is poised to compete with Hollywood Sci-Fi movies. However, their recently released trailer has stirred up some controversy.

Kalki 2898 AD Trailer Accused of Plagiarism
The Vyjayanthi Network YouTube Channel unveiled a new trailer for Kalki 2898 AD just a couple of days ago. This trailer, featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Prabhas, delves into the birth of Kalki, the tenth and final avatar of the Hindu deity Vishnu. However, the trailer’s opening scene has raised eyebrows, as it appears to have been directly lifted from a piece of artwork by the renowned Concept Illustrator Sung Choi without his permission.

Sung Choi, a veteran illustrator in the industry, has worked on several notable projects, including Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder and Bungie’s Destiny 2. He has also worked with major production houses like Disney, Warner Bros., and Netflix and companies like Nvidia, Fox, Valve, Activision Blizzard, and Wizards of the Coast. His recent Instagram post about the Kalki 2898 AD Trailer includes a startling accusation.

According to his post, Choi’s concept art, created more than 10 years ago, seems to have been used as the first shot for the movie’s new trailer. As you can see in the post below, the first scene of the Kalki 2898 AD trailer, which leads to a mention of the Vyjayanthi Movies logo, bears an uncanny resemblance to the mechanical ruins in the artwork created by Choi.

Choi called out Vyjayanthi Movies and Kalki 2898 AD in his post, but they have not responded at the time of writing.

IGN India has contacted Vyjayanthi Movies for a statement about the situation and their side of the story. We will update this article as soon as we receive a response.
