Here Is All You Need To Know About the Title Sequence of Bambai Meri Jaan Including Design, Idea, Concept, More

In the latest episode of India’s VFX Revolution, Vijesh Rajan and Yashoda Parthasarthy, Motion Design Directors of Plexusmotion, talked to IGN India about the opening title sequence of Bambai Meri Jaan. The Amazon Prime Video show is the story of a father and a cop who struggles to keep his children away from the crime-infested Bombay of the past. Vijesh Rajan and Yashoda Parthasarthy told IGN how the initial brief went, shared the concepts behind the sequences, the research and thought process, as well as the meaning they wanted to convey.

Initial brief of Bambai Meri Jaan with director Shujaat Saudagar
The Plexusmotion heads met with show director Shujaat Saudagar for the initial brief for the opening sequence where Saudagar explained that the idea of the show is to show a world that “lurks at night”, Rajan told IGN India. Saudagar wanted to bring the “underbelly of Bombay” to the forefront, and the initial concepts from Plexus had a focus on the characters of the show. However, the director wanted to detach from the characters, which led Plexus to come up with the idea of showing Mumbai from a God’s eye view instead.

Storyboard and ‘Heart of Mumbai’
The storyboard of this title sequence was developed when the background score was also “evolving”, shared Parthasarthy. “Pieces of the puzzle felt into place” when they were developing the VFX alongside the soundtrack sung by Shibani Akhtar, as per Parthasarthy. She also shared that their idea of showing a heart that featured the city was an idea that the director instantly loved, and it was ultimately in the sequence right before the name of the show pops up.

Reseach and font
As for the initial research, the team gathered pictures of Mumbai from ’70s and ’80s to find out how dense the population was, and the number of cars in comparison to today’s Mumbai. This research was done so that they could retain the original look of the city from that period. Rajan revealed that he wanted to evoke a “dream-like” emotion through the opening title sequence.

Mumbai has a rich, posh and royal outlook attached to it and its people, and the motion directors wanted to reflect that grandeur of Bombay through the use of the font for credits and the main title of the show.

Gateway of India
Parthasarthy said it was obvious that the Gateway of India would be featured in the sequence, since “nothing says Bombay like the Gateway [of India]”. Rajan also shared that the team’s concept behind the train scene was to show a series of revenge-based conflicts that escalated throughout the city.
