FUJIFILM has announced their new addition to the GFX System series, the FUJIFILM GFX100S II. The camera shares the image and main features of the GFX100 II in a smaller and lighter body. Let’s take a first look at the camera!Three months after the Tokyo Summit, FUJIFILM celebrates its second Summit in 2024 in Sydney, Australia. The Japanese company has announced the release of new cameras and lenses like the GF500mm F5.6 R LM OIS WR (GF500). The new GFX100S II is their new compact and lightweight camera for photographers and videographers looking to jump to medium format and those who want to expand their system. FUJIFILM GFX100S II. Credit: FUJIFILMNew sensor and X-Processor 5The FUJIFILM GFX100S II has a new GFX 102MP CMOS II large format sensor around 1.7 times larger than a 35mm full-frame sensor, and a high-speed X-Processor 5. The sensor enables the use of ISO80 in still mode (ISO100 in video mode) as a standard sensitivity, which, together with the 16-bit RAW shooting mode, gives more dynamic range and lower noise than the previous GFX model. The new sensor improves light use efficiency at the edges and comes with 20 Film Simulation Modes (including REALA ACE). The GFX100S II includes the “Pixel Shift Multi-Shot” feature. We can create a 16-shot RAW file, shifting the image sensor by 0.5 pixels for each shot and using the “Pixel Shift Combiner” software. The program combines the 16 RAW files to generate an image with approximately 400 million pixels. Another feature is the “Real Color” mode, which captures 4 RAW files with a one-pixel shift for each image. In that mode, it generates images with a resolution of 102 million pixels. Credit: FUJIFILMA powerful camera in a compact body The GFX100S II comes in a compact body weighing approximately 883g/1.94lb, the lightest camera in the GFX system. The height and depth are similar to the previous GFX models. The camera incorporates an improved autofocus system and algorithm with AI-based subject detection, able to detect animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes, trains, insects, and drones. Even in low-light situations, FUJIFILM claims GFX100S II’s autofocus works with strong results down to -5.5EV. With a shooting speed of up to 7.0 frames per second, the GFX100S II IBIS has a maximum of eight-stop five-axis performance, the most advanced in the GFX ecosystem. Combined with gyro and acceleration sensors, the unit detects movement and shakes and corrects them when creating an image. The camera’s high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF) has a magnification of 0.84x and 5.76 million dots, with a design that suppresses image distortion and flow caused by shifts in the position of the eye.FUJIFILM GFX100S II. Credit: FUJIFILMVideo and cloud integrationThe GFX100S II can record videos in up to 4K DCI /30P 4:2:2 10-bit quality in H264/265 on an SD card (with a data rate of up to 720Mbps). Apple ProRes can be recorded externally by connecting an SSD via a USB Type C cable. (ProResRaw/BMDRaw can be recorded to an external monitor recorder via HDMI). FUJIFILM reports 13 stops of dynamic range when using F-LOG2 (at ISO800). When recording video onto any comparable recording media, simultaneous monitoring via HDMI (Micro Type-D) with any Film Simulation applied is possible.Finally, the GFX100S II integrates with Frame.io for uploading photos and videos directly to the cloud without the need for an additional accessory. A metal hand grip will be available as a separate accessory for better grip and stability when using longer lenses like the new FUJINON GF500mm, also announced at this Summit.
