Fujifilm fixed the broken X-T50 firmware update in just two days

This was originally going to be a post alerting Fujifilm X-T50 ($1,799) users not to update to the latest X-T50 v1.01 firmware released a couple of days ago. In fact, the update was so bugged it wouldn’t let you update. Almost immediately, Fujifilm issued an announcement acknowledging the issue.

But between starting this post and hitting Publish, Fujifilm issued a fix. That’s some pretty quick service for a camera company. Normally, they can’t release an update these days without teasers and pre-launch announcements. Fixes usually take weeks or months.

So, what was the problem?

When Fujifilm released the v1.01 X-T50 firmware a few days ago, users reported that it wouldn’t install. Upon putting the firmware update on a memory card and entering it into the camera, users were told that the firmware was for a completely different camera and could not be installed.

Fujifilm responded to the feedback with an announcement:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued use of Fujifilm products.

We have just confirmed the following issue at firmware update to the latest firmware (Ver.1.01) of FUJIFILM X-T50 released on July 9, 2024.

<Phenomenon of this issue>“THIS FIRMWARE IS NOT FOR THIS MODEL TURN OFF THE CAMERA” message is displayed on the LCD when updating firmware from Ver.1.00 to Ver.1.01 and the firmware update cannot be executed.

<Applicable product>

Model:Lens Kit FUJIFILM X-T50/XF16-50mmF2.8-4.8 R LM WR

Camera Color:Silver

Serial Numbers:4BA24662 to 4BA26561, 4BA30592 to 4BA30661, 4BA34838 to 4BA35137, 4BA35678 to 4BA35857 and 4BA37468 to 4BA37687

<Permanent countermeasure to this issue>We will soon release the revised firmware with FUJIFILM X-T50 for those customers who are unable to update the firmware because of this issue. As soon as the revised firmware is ready, we will post it to our global website.

Note: If you have already updated the firmware to Ver.1.01 for FUJIFILM X-T50 without any issue, you can continue to use the camara because all functions with Ver.1.01 will work correctly.

The bug is said to affect a limited number of cameras, but nobody seems to know how limited that is. Essentially, some X-T50 cameras will install it just fine, while others don’t recognise it at all. If you have managed to install v1.01, you’re probably ok.

But, just in case, I’d still probably suggest updating to v1.02 anyway.

A quick response

Fujifilm’s quick response to the reports was admirable. Most camera companies usually take a while to admit bugs and faults in firmware updates and even longer to actually fix them. But Fujifilm acted almost as quickly with re-issuing the firmware update, too.

Only a couple of days after responding to reports from the initial v1.01 update, the company has now issued the v1.02 firmware update for the Fuji X-T50. The new update has no changes compared to v1.01, it just fixes the issue that some X-T50 users could not install it.

The firmware update Ver.1.02 from Ver.1.01 incorporates the following issues:

The firmware bug is fixed that the error message, “THIS FIRMWARE IS NOT FOR THIS MODEL TURN OFF THE CAMERA” is displayed on the LCD during the firmware update from Ver.1.00 to Ver.1.01 for specific serial numbers and the firmware update cannot be performed.Note-1: Refer to the “Notice and apology to FUJIFILM X-T50 users” for the details.Note-2: Although there are no differences of features and performance of the camera itself between Ver.1.01 and Ver.1.02, all X-T50 users can update this firmware (ver.1.02) even who had already completed the update to Ver.1.01.

The new Fujifilm X-T50 firmware update v1.02 is available to download from the Fujifilm website.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
