Bong Joon-ho’s Animated Film Set to Be Most Expensive Project in Korean Cinema History

Parasite director Bong Joon-ho is currently working on an animated film, which is reportedly going to have the highest production budget in Korean film history.

According to Korean news outlet Daum, the untitled animated film will be produced with a budget exceeding 700 billion won ($52 million), making it the most expensive Korean film to date. CJ ENM, with whom Bong Joon-ho has a long-standing collaboration, will handle distribution in Korea, while Sony Pictures will manage worldwide distribution.

The film, directed by Bong himself, will explore the relationship between deep-sea creatures and humans. It will be produced as a full CG animation by South Korean VFX specialist company, 4th Creative Party, which has worked on previous Joon-ho films such as Mother, Snowpiercer, and Okja. Hong Kyung-pyo, the cinematographer for Parasite, will contribute to visual lighting.

Joon-ho’s sci-fi film, Mickey 17, featuring Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, was scheduled for release on March 29. However, Warner Bros. announced in January that the film is now “undated.”

Adapted from the Edward Ashton novel Mickey7, Mickey 17’s story revolves around an “expendable,” who is tasked with dangerous and often deadly missions. Upon death, a new body of the expendable regenerates, retaining most of the old memories. You can check out its teaser below:
