Blackmagic Camera App is now available for Android

I have to admit I never expected this day to come, but it has. The Blackmagic Camera app is no longer iPhone-only. Blackmagic Design has now released the app for Android devices. Officially, Blackmagic says it’s compatible with certain Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones, but it seems to work with more.

With Filmic Pro pretty much dead in the water, this means Android users now have a decent video camera app available again. As with the iPhone version, Blackmagic Camera for Android simulates the look and feel of Blackmagic’s cinema cameras.

The above video is Blackmagic’s general introduction to the Blackmagic Camera App for iPhone and how to use it. Installing it for Android users is a little different, but only a little. You go to the Play Store instead of the App Store. The operation, though, is pretty much the same.

Officially, the app is compatible with a number of Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices. The complete list is below. However, I’ve installed it on my OnePlus 10 Pro and almost everything appears to be working well after a quick test of the features. The only issue I’ve spotted so far is that it can’t access any of my rear cameras other than the main one.

Whether or not it works with your Android device is something you’ll have to test for yourself if it’s not one of those on the list above. But as the app is completely free, testing it is pretty easy. Just go to the Play Store, install it and see what happens. In the worst case, it crashes or gives an error, and you uninstall it.

I expect it should at least run on most recent Android devices, even if not all of the features are available on all devices – like being able to pick rear cameras other than the main one. Hopefully, we’ll see the same level of features and support in the Android version that we see in the iOS version as new updates are released.

To download it and have a play, head on over to the Google Play store. If you try it and it works with devices not listed above, let us know what you’re using in the comments and whether it all works or not.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
