Apple is currently in discussions with Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, to incorporate Meta’s generative AI model into its recently released AI platform, Apple Intelligence.During the recent Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple introduced Apple Intelligence which is a tool designed to enhance its apps using AI powered features. Apple also revealed a partnership with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT into its system, symbolizing the beginning of alliances to boost its AI skills. Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, emphasized the importance of utilizing outside expertise to enhance Apple’s internal AI projects and discussed potential partnerships with Google’s Gemini, Anthropic, and Perplexity.Even though Meta is well-established in the tech industry, teaming up with Apple could provide a larger platform for distribution and validation. Meta has been making significant progress in its AI developments, particularly with its extensive language model, Llama, and its latest enhancements. The discussions between Apple and Meta, along with other AI companies, focus on integrating these AI models into Apple Intelligence without direct financial exchanges. Instead, AI companies would benefit from Apple’s vast distribution network, selling premium subscriptions through Apple’s platform, with Apple taking a cut of the subscription revenue, similar to its App Store model. Nevertheless, there are some obstacles to overcome. Regulatory concerns, specifically caused by the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, have caused Apple to restrict certain AI features in its latest operating systems.Integrating multiple AI systems requires careful handling of user privacy and data security, which Apple addresses by ensuring user consent before sharing data with AI models like ChatGPT. These partnerships also require time and detailed planning, as AI integrations are currently negotiated on a per-company basis, unlike the streamlined app submission process of the App Store.This collaboration has the potential to change how individuals engage with AI on a regular basis, increasing the availability and integration of sophisticated AI features in common gadgets.
