An Unofficial PC Port Will Soon Offer 4K Resolution and 60 FPS for This 25-Year-Old PlayStation Title
The Legend of Dragoon, the cult game made by Sony for the original PlayStation console, is set to receive 4K resolution and 60 fps, thanks to a talented team of modders. The single-player, turn-based game was released all the way back in 1999 in Japan before heading to North America in 2000 and Europe in 2001.
Sony has already ported the game to the PS4 and PS5, bringing in features such as quick save to make the game more appealing for new players. However, die-hard fans of the game wanted more from Sony and a proper remake of the title. So, a group of modders have developed an unofficial PC port for the game, which is titled Severed Chains, as reported by DSOGaming. While the remake is currently available to play, the modders have promised that it will receive 4K resolution and 60 fps “in a few months.”
The lead coder on this project said to PC Gamer that the PC port is a “reverse-engineered (unofficial) PC port of Legend of Dragoon and a full reconstruction of its game engine [that is] pushing the boundaries of traditional emulation software.” They added that their port is not trying to emulate software from PlayStation hardware, and it is a standalone port which allows the unofficial PC game to run “faster, leaner” and has “breakout modding capabilities.”
It is certainly an impressive feat from the modding team. The game is 25 years old and it is originally a 32-bit title. The new title features instant load, max item slots, option to skip FMVs, unlimited save slots, mouse support in menus, controller input, better quality audio, and bug fixes. Furthermore, the unofficial PC port of The Legend of Dragoon also offers text scrolling speed, automation of commands, and also a debug option which can be used to skip game battles and maps.
