The new Canon EOS R5 mark II will be available next month

Canon has been teasing us for a while now about a “big announcement”, and the wait is finally over. The camera brand has announced two major camera launches that will join the current mirrorless EOS R lineup. The first was the much-anticipated R1 (more on that here), and the second is the updated version of the massively popular EOS R5 with the launch of the Mark II version.

The EOS R5 Mark II camera features improved video-focused features for hybrid and video creators and a real-time multi-recognition tracking system for those who are primarily focused on still photography.

Canon says that the EOS R5 mark II is designed with performance and image quality at its core, with a few major improvements from its predecessor. The new version offers all the fundamental elements that are needed within one package for sports and wildlife photographers, journalists, producers, video producers and visual creators.

Key features of the EOS R5 Mark II

Key features of the EOS R5 Mark II camera include:

Back-illuminated stacked 45-megapixel full-frame sensor and new processing system forextremely fast reading

When compared to previous EOS R camera models, more advanced and powerful AFsystem including Eye Control AF and new subject-tracking technologies

Cinema EOS video features such as:o Custom Picture color profile including Canon Log 2o False Color Wave Form Monitoro 4CH Audio with 24bit LPCMo Pre-recording up to 5 seconds

New battery

One of the flaws of the previous cameras (the R5 and R5 C) was the relatively short battery life. With this in mind, Canon has updated the battery to a completely new type, the LP-E6P. This new battery features higher continuous power and twice the amperage.

Optional battery grips have also been designed, and there are three options:

BG-R20– For vertical operability

BG-R20EP with Ethernet – Port enables high-speed wired communication

CF-R20EP with Cooling Fan and Ethernet – Cooling fan helps maximize movieperformance

The EOS R5 Mark II camera features the new DIGIC Accelerator, which is an addition to the DIGIC Xprocessor. The DIGIC Accelerator assists with deep learning processing which helps to analyze large volumes of data quickly and supports the next-gen AF system, Dual Pixel Intelligent AF.

Dual Pixel Intelligent AF is based on Accelerated Capture and deep learning, allowing end-users to experience tracking advancements, such as body, joint and head area estimation and focus on people other than the main subject. This should give much greater accuracy to autofocus tracking, especially in challenging situations such as sports games with multiple subjects moving around.
