FUJIFILM X-T50 Announced – 40MP, 6.2K Video, IBIS, Film Simulation Dial, and more

The new FUJIFILM X-T50 camera offers a compact and lightweight body that includes virtually all the features of the X-T5. It has a high-resolution 40MP sensor with IBIS, the new X-Processor 5, up to 6.2K 30fps or 4K DCI at up to 60fps video recording with internal 10-bit 4:2:2 F-Log2. External 6.2K 30fps 12-bit HDMI raw video output, tilting screen, viewfinder, pop-up flash, a new film simulation dial, and more. A full review of the new camera is currently in the making and will be published next week!FUJIFILM just announced a couple of new products during the X-Summit event. This article focuses on the new, very compact APS-C camera, the FUJIFILM X-T50. If you want to know more about the other newly announced products, please check the corresponding articles. Now, let’s take a quick look at the new X-T50.FUJIFILM X-T50 with the new FUJINON 16-50mm lens. Credit: FUJIFILMFUJIFILM X-T50 – smaller X-T5Fitting in the company’s product naming scheme, the FUJIFILM X-T50 camera is a very compact, interchangeable lens, X-Mount APS-C camera with the classic (someone could say vintage) FUJIFILM body design with physical dials and very subtle hand grip. (The new camera body “round design” certainly helps in achieving this feeling). The point of the X-Txx line of cameras has always been to shrink down the body of a corresponding X-Tx camera while keeping most of the features available. This is also the case with the X-T50, but this time it really seems as if FUJIFILM was able to pack virtually all the X-T5 features into a compact body. The camera weighs 438g/15.45oz, including battery and memory card, and the dimensions are 123.8mm x 84mm x 48.8mm (4.87” x 3.3” x 1.92”). This is significantly smaller than the X-T5, but slightly larger than the previous X-T30 II. Despite the small size, at the heart of the camera, we can find the 40.2MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor and the latest X-Processor 5 image processor. This combo achieves up to 8fps continuous shooting with the full sensor resolution. The camera features a built-in 5-axis IBIS with a maximum of 7.0 stops stabilization. The electronic shutter can reach up to 1/180,000s speed.Video recording – 6.2K, 4:2:2 (10-bit Internally, 12-bit externally) FUJIFILM X-T50 seems like a capable filmmaker’s tool as well. The camera can record internally in 10-bit color depth with 4:2:2 subsampling. All this in 6.2K up to 30fps or 4K DCI up to 60fps (or up to 30fps in HQ mode, with 6.2K oversampling). For slow motion, the X-T50 can achieve up to 240fps in FullHD. FUJIFILM claims 13+ stops of dynamic range when shooting with the F-Log2 profile. The good thing is that the X-T50 can output a 6.2K 12-bit 4:2:2 30fps raw video signal over its micro-HDMI Type-D port. This is designed to be compatible with video recorders to save the video signal as ProRes RAW or Blackmagic RAW video files. When recording internally, the camera does offer recording limits to protect from overheating its very compact body. FUJIFILM claims in a 25°C environment, the camera can record continuously for up to 60 minutes of 4K 30fps video or up to 30 minutes of 4K 60fps video. In a 40°C environment, the maximum recording time shrinks to 25 and 10 minutes, respectively. There is only one SD card slot, which accepts up to UHS-II SDXC cards with V90 class.FUJIFILM X-T50 new rounder design and the Tally LED light is also there. The camera can recognize not only “Human face/eye” but also “Animal”, “Bird”, “Automobile”, “Bike”, “Airplane”, “Train”, “Insect” and “Drone”. There has been a 50% increase in the number of PDAF pixels to improve focus accuracy. The predictive AF for moving subjects improved as well, according to FUJIFILM.FUJIFILM X-T50 tilted LCD screen. Credit: FUJIFILMX-T50 has a rear 3” tiltable LCD touchscreen with a 1.84M dot display. There is also a viewfinder (0. 62x magnification, 2.36M dots, 100fps refresh rate) and a pop-up flash integrated into the viewfinder compartment. Just like the larger X-T5, the new X-T50 has a 3.5mm microphone input jack but for monitoring audio, one will need a USB-C to a 3.5 female jack cable to connect a headphone. When it comes to powering, the camera uses an NP-W126S type battery. (Same as the X100VI). Surprisingly, the small body of the X-T50 also includes the camera-to-cloud integration for Adobe’s Frame.io. The camera can automatically upload stills and videos via a WiFi connection for a quick C2C workflow.FUJIFILM X-T50 upper view with the new dedicated Film Simulation Dial. Credit: FUJIFILMDedicated Film Simulation dialFUJIFILM cameras have been known for the included film simulations. These are basically color profiles that should tweak the colors of the final image to resemble the chosen film stock. One of the popular ones among filmmakers for a quick “ready-to-publish-look” has been the ETERNA film simulation, for example. For the first time, FUJIFILM put a physical, dedicated film simulation dial on a camera. The X-T50 offers a total of 20 different film simulations including the recently introduced REALA ACE mode. The dial on the top plate of the X-T50 includes 8 pre-defined simulations and four custom ones.FUJIFILM X-T50 input/output terminals.
