Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus Announced With a 10 Core Oryon CPU and a 45 TOPS NPU for AI Applications



Qualcomm has introduced its new Snapdragon X Plus which comes packed with their integrated Oryon CPU custom processor. The custom Oryon is a 10-core CPU with an LPDDR5 42 MB cache and a max clock speed of 3.4 GHz. The Snapdragon X Plus is designed to “meet the demands of on-device AI-driven applications”, as per Qualcomm’s announcement.

The Oryon CPU is said to be 37% faster than competitors on the market, and Qualcomm also claims that it consumes up to 54% less power. As for the AI-driven applications, Snapdragon X Plus is powered by the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU which is capable of 45 TOPS, which Qualcomm calls the world’s fastest NPU for laptops.

Qualcomm Technologies’ Kedar Kondap, senior vice president and general manager of compute and gaming, spoke about the new Snapdragon X Plus, adding that it will “power AI-Supercharged PCs that enable even more users to excel as radical new AI experiences emerge in this period of rapid development and deployment.”

Some of the applications that are making use of the NPU in Snapdragon X Plus are Visual Studio Code where AI is assisting programmers to generate fresh code. On Audacity, new music can be created through the use of Riffusion on-device AI. Moreover, content creators can use AI in OBS Studio to automatically translate over 100 languages into live captions during live streams using Whisper on-device.

Snapdragon X Plus, along with a superior Snapdragon X Elite processor, will be launching in various laptops from mid-2024 onwards.
