Dune 2 U.S. Box Office Earnings Surpass the Prequel’s Lifetime Earnings in the Country in Just 10 Days
Dune: Part Two, the epic sci-fi movie, has outperformed Dune: Part One by a wide margin at the box office. The films, based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune, tell the story of Paul Atreides in a world fuelled by politics, power, and religion. A new report states that Dune 2, within 10 days, has already overtaken Dune’s entire domestic box office earnings in the US.
Director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune earned $41 million in its opening weekend back in 2021. Now, Dune 2 has made over $152 million in 10 days in the U.S., as reported by Variety. This is way more than the entire $108 million domestic earnings by Dune.
While that is certainly impressive, some factors affected Dune’s performance at the box office. For starters, the movie came out in 2021 during the pandemic, and it was also simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max, the streaming platform. This option to watch the movie at home did hurt the overall earnings that the movie may have earned had it been solely released in theatres before eventually moving to the streaming service.

Kung Fu Panda 4 takes top spot from Dune 2 for its box office weekend opening
Dune 2 has been the more commercial success for Warner Bros. so far, but the movie has been dethroned at the domestic box office by a new release. Kung Fu Panda 4, the animated movie, opened its run at the box office with a strong weekend, bringing in $58.3 million.
This is the best weekend opening for any Kung Fu Panda movie. The movie is the fourth instalment in the series, and is released eight years after the prequel flick. Furthermore, this great opening weekend is the strongest commercial start for a Kung Fu Panda movie since the inception of the franchise 16 years ago, when Kung Fu Panda 1 came out in 2008.
