Suzume’s Theatrical Re-Release in India Fuels Fan Demand for Release Plans of Other Anime Films

PVR Pictures revealed on January 31 that it will re-release Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume in Indian theatres starting from February 9.

While the news generally signals an opportunity for more audiences to experience the film, which was well-received in India during its initial release on April 21, 2023, many fans are also puzzled by the decision.

The confusion stems from the fact that major anime films like Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Haikyu!! Movie: Battle of the Garbage Dump, and Spy × Family Code: White have been released or are set to release worldwide. These movies boast significant fan bases in India, and Indian fans have been eagerly awaiting information about their releases, but there has been no word about it yet.

It’s not that there is no interest in watching Suzume. Director Makoto Shinkai enjoys popularity in India, and the film performed reasonably well, earning ₹10 crore at the box office by anime film standards in the country. However, fans also desire to see these other anime films on the big screen. Despite the clear demand, PVR has remained silent on the matter.

The announcement of Suzume’s re-release has only intensified these demands. Online comments reflect this sentiment.

“Not that I am complaining, but is it really necessary to re-release it at this moment? Huh, PVR?” a commenter wrote.

“What about The Boy and the Heron by Hayao Miyazaki?” another commenter inquired.

Fans say that while the opportunity to see Suzume again on the big screen is appreciated, it would be even better if theatre companies listened to fans and considered their preferences for film screenings.

It’s uncertain whether any of the mentioned films will receive an Indian release. However, for now, fans who haven’t experienced Suzume on the big screen or those who wish to rewatch the film have an opportunity to do so starting February 9.
