Epic Games Store Will Allow Blockchain Games That Are Given an Adults Only Rating by ESRB; Here’s What It Means
Epic Games Store has made some changes to its content guidelines for publishers, which now creates room for blockchain games that have only received an Adults Only rating from ESRB (Entertainment Software Ratings Board) due to the inclusion of blockchain technology in the game.
Epic Games Store creates exception for blockchain games rated Adults Only
Epic announced on December 19, 2023, that both Gods Unchained and Striker Manager 3 are going to be available on the platform once again. That’s when the policy changes were also mentioned, as both of these games had previously been removed from the store due to the Adults Only rating.
That earlier decision came from Epic Games’ own rules for Adults Only content. “Products with Adults Only ratings cannot be distributed on Epic Games Store”, is still mentioned on the guidelines. However, Epic has now added the following exception to its content guidelines: “The Epic Games Store makes an exception for products in cases where an [Adults Only] rating was applied solely due to the usage of blockchain or NFT technology.”

It added that the games that receive this exception must still adhere to Epic’s rules on “pornography, gambling, and hateful content” along with other content and blockchain technology guidelines.
On the other side of the spectrum is Valve’s Steam storefront which banned all forms of blockchain games in 2021. Steam mentioned back then in its policy that blockchain games which “issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs” will not be published on the platform.
