Mario Movie’s ‘Peaches’ Snubbed by the Oscars for Best Song

Despite mass popularity, cheeky lyrics, and a comically soulful sound, ‘Peaches’ from The Super Mario Bros. Movie was not nominated for The Academy Awards’ “Best Original Song” category.Performed by Jack Black in the smash hit Super Mario Bros. Movie, Peaches became a hit in its own right, making Billboard’s Top 100 list and remaining in its ranks for five weeks. Given The Super Mario Bros. Movie is one of 2023’s highest-grossing movies, it only makes sense that this would-be Tenacious D song is one of this year’s most popular movie tunes, but it wasn’t a shoo-in. Competition was tough for the category this year. According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, 94 songs were eligible to receive a nomination for the Best Original Song Category. The category’s list of nominees is headlined by ‘I’m Just Ken,’ ‘Dance The Night,’ and ‘What Was I Made For’ from Barbie, the only movie to top Super Mario Bros. at the box office, as well as ‘Am I Dreaming’ from Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse. Here’s the full list of nominated songs and the movies they’re from:“It Never Went Away” from “American Symphony”“Dear Alien (Who Art In Heaven)” from “Asteroid City”“Dance The Night” from “Barbie”“I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie”“What Was I Made For?” from “Barbie”“Keep It Movin’” from “The Color Purple”“Superpower (I)” from “The Color Purple”“The Fire Inside” from “Flamin’ Hot”“High Life” from “Flora and Son”“Meet In The Middle” from “Flora and Son”“Can’t Catch Me Now” from “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”“Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)” from “Killers of the Flower Moon”“Quiet Eyes” from “Past Lives”“Road To Freedom” from “Rustin”“Am I Dreaming” from “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”This isn’t the first bit of bad news for fans of this year’s most successful animated movie. Speaking with Variety, Jack Black lamented the lack of communication from Illumination and Universal Pictures about a potential sequel to the Mario movie. Black even detailed his pitch for a squel, which the Hollywood multi-hyphenate referred to as, “a full musical.”For the timebeing, Nintendo’s only annonuced on-screen adaptations for other IP, including a live action Legend of Zelda movie. Additionally, rumors have indicated that a movie focused on Seth Rogen’s portrayal of Donkey Kong (as seen in the Mario movie), is currently in the works at Illumination, though neither Universal nor Nintendo have officially announced the project.
