Intel Core Ultra Mobile Processors Launched Along With 5th Gen Xeon AI CPUs, Aim to Power the Industry Shift to AI; Details Here

Intel has unveiled its Core Ultra mobile processors, at its AI Everywhere event that took place in New York City on December 14. Intel ushers in a new generation of personal computers that take advantage of AI capabilities across its operating systems and applications.

Intel also revealed its 5th generation of Xeon processors at its AI Everywhere event that took place in New York City on December 14. With this, Intel launched its new generation of Xeon processors within less than a year of the launch of the previous generation.

Intel Core Ultra mobile processors launched
Being dubbed the AI PC, these will be powered by the Intel Core Ultra mobile processors, featuring AI acceleration capability across the CPU, GPU and neural processing unit (NPU) architecture. This comes as a part of Intel’s AI PC acceleration program where more than 100 independent software vendors and above 300 AI accelerated features will be optimised for these processors.

The Intel Core Ultra mobile processors are built of the Intel 4 process technology, which uses the Foveros 3D advanced packaging technology. Additionally, it features new Performance cores (P-core), Efficient-cores (E-cores) and low-power Efficient-cores (LP E-cores) which together reportedly deliver over 11% of multithreaded performance as compared to competition. Its built-in Arc GPU promises double the graphics performance over the previous generation. Additionally, Intel claims that its latest NPU, which has been branded as Intel AI Boost, “is purpose-built to handle longer-running AI workloads at low power”, assuring 2.5X better power efficiency than the previous generation.

Launch and availability
The Intel Core Ultra processors are now available globally. We can expect these processors to power more than 230 of the world’s first AI PCs from brands like Acer, ASUS, Dell, Dynabook, Gigabyte, Google Chromebook, HP, Lenovo, LG, Microsoft Surface, MSI and Samsung.

Michelle Johnston Holthaus, Intel executive vice president and general manager of Client Computing Group, said in a statement, “The launch of Intel Core Ultra represents the unmatched scale and speed at which Intel is enabling AI on the PC. By 2028, AI PCs will comprise 80% of the PC market 2 and together with our vast ecosystem of hardware and software partners, Intel is best positioned to deliver this next generation of computing.”

Intel launches 5th Gen Xeon AI processors
These processors are aimed for artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, networking, storage, database, and security. Intel informs that at the same power as the previous generation, more compute and faster memory are being offered. At the same time, since the 5th generation Xeon processors are compatible with both the software and platforms of 4th Gen Intel Xeon processors, customers will be able to simply upgrade their processors without having to go through much hassle.

These 5th Gen Xeon processors come with AI acceleration in its cores to deal with demanding end-to-end AI workloads. This reportedly includes up to 42% higher inference performance and less latency on large language models. Intel further quantifies that the 5th Gen Xeon processors deliver a gain of 21% average performance for general compute performance. It also delivers 36% higher average performance per watt across a range of customer workloads, thus being more efficient than the previous gen.

The company claims that the latest 5th Gen Intel Xeon processors deliver increased performance per watt, while lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO) for workloads involving artificial intelligence.

Features of the 5th Gen Xeon Processors
Intel informs that the 5th gen Xeon processors have up to 64 cores per CPU, with increased last-level eight channels of DDR5, and higher memory transfer speeds. It is also reportedly compatibility with CXL Type 3 workflows through leading cloud service providers. Additionally, these processors come with Intel Trust Domain Extensions (Intel TDX), which offers increased confidentiality and security at the VM level.

Market Launch Details
Intel has announced that top OEMS (original equipment manufacturers) Cisco, Dell, HPE, IEIT Systems, Lenovo, Super Micro Computer and others, will launch single and dual-socket systems featuring the 5th Gen Xeon processors beginning in the first quarter of 2024. Further information will be revealed by the companies in 2024.
