Internet Wins Again As People Work Together To Find Long-Lost Song From a 1998 Episode; Here Is How It Happened

When people say that the internet remains undefeated, it is not merely a phrase associated with memes and finding the funny side of everything. While the internet is often a place with a lot of opinions and criticism with people debating and fighting amongst themselves, there are some rare moments when people come together to achieve a common goal.

How it started
One recent example of this would be a song from an X-Files episode in 1998. Over the years, many people have tried to find the name of a song that played in the background of the episode. This 25-year-old mystery has finally been put to bed as the song became viral on December 4 when Twitter user @laurenancona posted that she liked the song, and used Shazam to find out the name, but it did not work. She embarked on her research to locate the song, and soon enough, other users started to pitch in.

Shazam can’t find itso I look up the lyrics& all I find from the lyrics are people talking about THIS episode of the X-files from 1998wut

Finding the music editor and cue sheet
People began tracking down the country song by contacting Jeff Charbonneau, the music editor for that episode (S6E5 Dreamland II). Jeff said that he did not remember the song and that it was not written for the show. He also mentioned that there was no formal music supervisor for X-Files back then. He then directed people towards writers Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad) and John Shoban, stating that usually the writers pick the songs for an episode. Jeff also tried to look for the cue sheets for the song, but did not have them.

However, people of the internet, resourceful as they are, tracked it down. Specifically, Twitter user wilroymusic, who shared his findings on the long and viral thread where all the detective work was being done.

Song name found
The search was on until Jonathan Leahy pitched in, who is a film & TV music supervisor. He knew the answer to this mystery and shared that the song is Staring At The Stars written by Glenn Jordan and Dan Marfisi. He also revealed that the duo had two more tracks that were featured in X-Files episode 605.

the song is “Staring At The Stars” written by Glenn Jordan and Dan Marfisi. these two songwriters provided two additional tracks (with vocals) in episode 605, so my guess is they custom made these recordings for the show.

Song makers find CD backup, and will release their track soon
Soon, people reached out to Dan Marfisi and Glenn Jordan. Marfisi revealed that Jordan still has a CD backup and that he’s heading over to his house to pick it up. Marfisi also announced that the duo are now figuring out how to release their track from all those years ago, and everyone involved in the quest to find it, could not be more excited about the song release.

Glenn has it on CD backup! Since he doesn’t have a CD player, I’m heading over in the AM to get it. Thanks again so much for your interest. https://t.co/lbbsLPeBBK

Hi all of you wonderful & kind people. I now have the song and will hopefully post it in the next day or so. We’re still deciding how to do it. Again, this is a rare experience and you’ve really made the two of us feel fantastic. THANK YOU!
