Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 To Feature Major Changes?

Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Flip 5 (review) and Galaxy Z Fold 5 (review) a few months ago, and their successors are not expected to appear until the second half of 2024. However, rumors surrounding the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 have started to pick up steam. The latest report indicated Samsung might introduce the most significant change in its foldable catalog: the display.

Prolific leaker and analyst Ross Young shared his forecast about Samsung’s unannounced next generation flagship devices on X (formerly Twitter). According to him, both the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 will feature larger foldable and cover displays compared to their predecessors. This is in stark contrast with minor changes in both devices for several generations now, something that is more evident in the latter.

The consultant elaborated on details about the clamshell model, where Samsung will incorporate a 3.9-inch cover display on the Galaxy Z Flip 6 of an unknown ratio and resolution, making it a notable increase from the current 3.5-inch screen in the Galaxy Z Flip 5. It should be noted that Samsung already made the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s cover display a lot wider compared to its predecessor.

It remains unclear what will the new internal or foldable screen for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 be, though. The current 6.7-inch screen has remained the same since the original Galaxy Z Flip was launched in 2020. An increase in the panel size would likely be a welcome improvement.

As for the Galaxy Z Fold 6, it is likely that Young refers to a wider cover screen with a comparable aspect ratio as the upcoming Galaxy S24 Ultra. This will likely ditch the unusually tall ratio featured in the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Samsung’s previous book-folding models.

At the same time, a new external ratio on the outside means the inner foldable screen would also need to adapt itself to the new format. Perhaps this suggests the fully opened Galaxy Z Fold 6 might offer a shorter yet wider display, as seen in the Google Pixel Fold (review).
Unfortunately, Young didn’t disclose anything about the existing prominent display crease in both the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6. This leaves us hoping that the South Koreans could at least consider reducing the crease visibility on these foldable smartphones, which would then place them on par with the OnePlus Open (review) or Huawei Mate X3 (review).
