One Piece Creator Reveals He Sends Daily Blood Pressure Readings to Doctor

Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, is known for his commitment to the series, often placing his health as a secondary concern while working on it.

In an interview from a Japanese variety show, Oda mentioned that he sends his blood pressure numbers to his doctor daily. The doctor keeps warning him that the numbers are too high, but Oda firmly believes, “An ideal blood pressure can’t always be applied to everyone and so there is no problem.”

Recently, a chapter of One Piece was published in an incomplete state. Chapter 1098 lacked final line art and colouring when it appeared in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. Additionally, it included an apology from Oda. Although this was attributed to time constraints, it’s not the first time Oda has faced health issues.

In 2012, he shared that he has a random sleep routine, sleeping for just three hours every night from 2-5 AM. He’s had this sleep pattern for at least ten years. In 2013, Oda was hospitalised, yet that didn’t stop his dedication to drawing and advancing the story of One Piece. Even while in the hospital, he persisted in working on the ongoing story of the series. Oda received a visit from Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto, during his hospitalisation. Kishimoto was astonished to see Oda’s dedication to his work despite being in the hospital.

In 2019, it was reported that he had diabetes and gout because he sat too much while working on One Piece. Last year, Oda revealed that he skips meals a lot when he works on One Piece, which made his eating habits unhealthy and caused him to gain weight. Because of this, his doctor got worried about his high blood pressure.

In the manga industry, health problems are widespread because authors work long hours without enough breaks. This often results in them developing health issues. As a consequence, many authors face situations where their health deteriorates, forcing them to take breaks from their work.
